  • Puthut Ninyi (Hello). My name is Mary McMurtrie (Proberts).  I am a proud Kalkadoon/Kalkatungu (Mt. Isa) woman born on Turrbal Country (Brisbane/Meeanjin) and currently living on Kabi Kabi Country (Moreton Bay Qld) with family connections to Yarrabah (Cairns).

I am a self-taught contemporary artist using a range of mediums to include acrylics and ochres. I am guided by the spirit of my Aboriginal Ancestors and by the knowledge and wisdom passed onto me by my Elders. My artwork is inspired by the deep spiritual connection I have always felt and continue to feel for Country.

I acknowledge and pay my deep respects to my Elders and thank them for their ongoing guidance and encouragement to continue to share stories through my paintings and designs. I am blessed to be able to share stories of the Heart, of Spirit and of Country, through my artworks.

Every piece I create is unique and tells a story by using a variety of styles and techniques including concepts of ancient symbolism along with rich and vibrant palettes of colours inspired by the sheer beauty, vitality and essence of land, waters and skies.

My hope is to inspire our young ones to express themselves, share their stories and to carry the spirit, courage and strength of all those gone before us, through painting.
